: any member of a class of words that refers to a thing (book), a person (Noah Webster), an animal (cat), a place (Springfield), a quality (softness), a state (tranquility), an idea or concept (truth), or an action (reading)
Note: Nouns typically can be combined with determiners to serve as the subject or object of a verb ("the book," "a cat," "these truths"), can be interpreted as singular or plural, and can be replaced with a pronoun. A noun is usually a single word, but not always: cake, school bus, and time and a half are all nouns.
