Word History

Etymology

probably clipped from PogChamp, an emoticon used on the streaming platform Twitch to express a mixture of excitement and astonishment

Note: The PogChamp emoticon was taken from a YouTube video by Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez originally uploaded on November 26, 2010. PogChamp alludes to the game pogs, a revival of a game called "milk caps" popular on the Hawaiian islands in the late 1920's and 1930's. The "caps" were circular pieces of cardboard which formed part of the lids on glass milk bottles. The game was reintroduced in Hawaii in 1991 by an elementary school teacher named Blossom Galbiso (1949-94). In place of milk caps she used the disposable lids from a drink called POG, originally produced by Haleakala Dairy on Maui, Hawaii. POG was a mixture of juices from passionfruit, orange and guava. The revived milk cap game was hence called pogs. The self-styled World Pog Federation trademarked the name pog, and a commercial version of the game was produced by Milton Bradley. The extended form poggers is perhaps after checkers.
