Note: The meaning of the word is derived from a specific instance of fridging: in the comic Green Lantern (vol. 3, no. 54, August, 1994), the superhero Green Lantern's girlfriend Alex DeWitt is killed by a villain and stuffed into a refrigerator. The episode was taken as emblematic of fridging by the American comic fan and author Gale Simone, principal creator of a website, Women in Refrigerators, on which she published a list (in March, 1999) of women harmed or killed for purposes of the plot in superhero comics. The verb fridge in reference to the plot device arose sometime after the publication of the list.
