The vibe in vibe check refers to a distinctive feeling or quality that is capable of being senses, as in “This place has a good/bad vibe.” Vibe check is used for the assessment of people, places, or things for such a feeling or quality.
How is vibe check used?
Often someone or something is said to “pass” or “fail” a vibe check. Comment sections of a news article, or responses to a social media post, are often said to “pass the vibe check” by someone who agrees with their general tenor, for example. Vibe check is used to recommend or warn against someone purchasing something, watching something, sticking around something (such as a party or an online community) or someone, etc. Vibe check is also sometimes used as a verb.
I generally vibe check people and I clearly remember doing that off of a comment he made that made me want to follow him. But then again I think I vibe checked him again on a different iffy one.
