What does big back mean?

Big back refers to a large body, especially of a person, either because they are muscular from working out or plump/round/full-figured. Big back can also refer to or describe objects that are chonky, that is, bulky or oversize.

Where does big back come from?

Back has long been used in African American and Caribbean English to refer to a rear end, and especially a large or voluptuous rear end (sometimes famously, as in the 1992 song “Baby Got Back” by Seattle rapper Sir-Mix-a-Lot). Some online sources have suggested that the extended use of big back to refer to the entirety of a large body, and not just the buttocks, stems from this use of back. Big back and associated terms (see below) have risen in popularity in the mid-2020s.

How is big back used?

Big back is used as a noun, but can also be used attributively—like an adjective—to modify another noun. It is often used in the phrase “big back behavior” to refer to behavior befitting a large person.

Let’s be honest—frying ribs is some real “big back behavior.” It’s like someone said, “I love BBQ ribs, but what if I just fried them?” You know what? It worked.

All forms and applications of big back can be (and sometimes are) used to body-shame people with larger bodies, and so can be harmful and used in bullying. But big back can also be celebratory and positive, especially when proudly and unashamedly self-applied.
