Symbiote was among our top lookups on April 24th, 2018, after it was heard by millions of people in the new trailer for Venom, a movie in which the word has a starring role.
Things I learned from the new Venom trailer: I've been mispronouncing symbiote my entire life.— Walt Williams (@waltdwilliams) April 24, 2018
Things I learned after watching the Venom trailer: Actually, no, I've been saying it correctly.
It's been a roller coaster of a morning.
A lively discussion on the proper pronunciation of the word ensued on Twitter (AKA The-Battleground-of-the-Armchair-Phoneticians), in which many felt that the trailer had erred in its vocal rendering of symbiote. While tweet evidence shows that you aren't alone if you think it sounds off, the pronunciation used in the movie (\SIM-bye-oht\) appears to be on equal footing with \SIM-bee-oht\ in accepted use.
Symbiote (which is synonymous with symbiont) is defined as "an organism living in symbiosis." Symbiosis is "the living together in more or less intimate association or close union of two dissimilar organisms (as in parasitism or commensalism)."
