Eponymous

A challenging question on a recent episode of ...

When:

Lookups spiked on October 22, 2014.

Why:

The Final Jeopardy category for that day's game was Eponymous Geography–places named after people. The question wasn't easy:

Named around 1616, it's the world's fifth-largest island & the largest named after a person.

Contestant Ali Palmer from Portland, OR knew the correct answer and won the day's game.

Eponymous means "of, relating to, or being the person or thing for whom or which something is named." It comes directly from the Greek word that has the same meaning, from the words that translate literally as "after a name."

Oh, and the answer to the Jeopardy question? Baffin Island.
