Merriam-Webster Word of the Day September Story of the Month

The Superminati is a conclave of the world’s greatest superheroes. The meeting is a secret to all except the superheroes, but the proceedings are always aboveboard. The location is in a jungle that could make even the fittest perspire. From the outside, the headquarters of the Superminati looks like a hermit’s hut. But juxtaposed with that rustic exterior is the inside—a strangely large, futuristic space with a cornucopia of high-tech screens, computers, gadgets, and devices.

When all are in attendance, the room is filled with bright and colorful costumes bordering on ostentatious. There are caped crusaders in every shade of color, including cerulean, cyan, puce, chartreuse, and periwinkle. Volatus, who can chart a perfectly accurate trajectory that carries him across entire hemispheres in just minutes, is usually in attendance, along with Regina Tiv, who has the unique power of regenerating parts of her body. And then there’s Zip—a superfast, super-strong juggernaut of a person, capable of running on water. As you can imagine, the behind-the-scenes scuttlebutt is always very entertaining.

As the heroes have made the world safer, however, the agenda for the Superminati has become diluted with “boring” problems like inflation and political quid pro quos. In this year’s meeting some members even fell asleep during the first presentation.

But the quiet didn’t last long. Seemingly from nowhere, a cuckoo sound interrupted the meeting. Then another. And another. And many, many more. Where could it have been coming from? After all, the headquarters was sealed. Someone in the room must have been to blame. Accusations came thick and fast. Heroes began accusing one another and spurned each other’s claims of innocence. Finally, a voice called out and the fighting stopped. In the corner, crocheting with flaxen wool, sat Futura, a superhero with the power to predict the future. She spoke calmly, saying “Zip, open the cabinet adjacent to your chair.” He did. And what do you suppose happened? That’s right, a cuckoo clock fell out, kerplunk, and the noise stopped. “Thank goodness that’s over,” said a contented Futura. She picked up her yarn. “Let’s continue the meeting.”
