: of, relating to, or concerned with the countries of the Near East
used originally of the Balkan States, later of the region included in the Ottoman Empire, and still later of the countries of southwestern Asia and North Africa extending roughly from Libya or Morocco to Afghanistan

Note: Middle Eastern has now become the more common term.
