What does whimsy mean?
We define whimsy three ways in our dictionary. It can refer to a whim or caprice (a capricious or eccentric and often sudden idea or turn of the mind); the quality or state of being lightly fanciful; or a fanciful or fantastic device, object, or creation especially in writing or art. A fourth use of whimsy as an adjective or attributive noun is developing online most often to refer to a whimsical aesthetic, as of fashion or décor, or a whimsical attitude or lifestyle.
Examples of whimsy
“Whimsy” is having a moment, thanks to Gen Z-ers and some millennials who have recast the word to characterize a lifestyle that blends playfulness, spontaneity and being present. … And it’s not just products. For example, sending postcards and doing activities one’s 10-year-old self might have enjoyed are considered “whimsy hobbies.” There is a whimsy lexicon—those who use it might say “saunter,” for example, instead of “walk.” At a glance, the style is a few steps away from being twee.

The whimsy mindset is all about savoring life’s small joys, staying present and reconnecting with your creative inner child. Think vintage clothing, fanciful décor, handwritten stationery and yes—scrapbooking—which actually has been making a quiet comeback for a while now. But if there’s anytime to jump on the whimsy aesthetic and start romanticizing your memories, it might be today.

Where does whimsy come from?
The noun whimsy was formed irregularly from whim-wham, meaning “a whimsical object or device especially of ornament or dress.” Whim-wham was first used in print in English around the turn of the 16th century, while both whim and whimsy debuted about a century later. The adjective whimsical followed.
How is whimsy used?
