Hi. I’m 5’ 1”, and skinny. I have a lot of people who call me a “smol bean”, and that I need to be protected. I just find it kind of cringey, and I hate it when people say that to me.

Where does smol bean come from?
Smol bean combines the slang adjective smol, meaning “adorably small,” with bean used as a term of affection.
Purposeful misspellings are also legion, and can take on a life of their own: smol is an interesting one. According to Know Your Meme, it started in 2015 when young fans of a musician called Tyler Josephs took to calling him ‘smol bean’, a cutesy but not entirely weird nickname.

How is smol bean used?
Increasingly, smol bean is used facetiously of mockingly in situations where someone is feigning innocence, defenselessness, or ignorance in order to avoid responsibility or culpability for something.
Then again, for the characters in this A.I. story, none of them thinks they’re the villains, all the way up to the head of network. In the face of the relentless algorithm, everyone claims to be just a smol bean.
