What does remember some guys mean?

To remember some guys, in team sports fandom, is to reminisce about obscure players of the past, who are obscure because they are underrated or just mediocre, but may have had memorable moments. Where does remember some guys come from?

This sports-specific use of the phrase remember some guys is attributed to “Let’s Remember Some Guys,” a series of articles and videos on the website Deadspin that ran from 2017-2019, and was hosted/written by journalists David Roth, Lauren Theisen, Tom Ley, Samer Kalaf, and others. In the videos, the hosts open packs of trading cards and discuss the players that randomly come up. As Thiesen wrote in the second installment, titled “Let’s Remember Some Guys: 1992 Guys”:

When you come into some unopened packs of early ‘90s baseball cards, there’s not a whole lot you can do with them. You’re basically just out a few quarters—unless one of your joys in life is sitting on some vaguely retro furniture and trying to turn faint sparks of memory into fully formed remembrance. Thankfully, neat facts and obscure baseball men are two of Deadspin’s specialties, so that’s exactly what we did. Though I was not born until 1995 and therefore could not remember these particular guys, our own David Roth apparently knows every MLB player with more than 100 plate appearances over the last three decades.
Lauren Theisen, 22 Dec. 2017

How is remember some guys used?

Remembering some guys is both a fun and nostalgic endeavor, which is reflected in the phrase remember some guys. The phrase is also gently humorous, with vagueness of “some guys” poking at the obscurity of the many thousands of largely forgotten athletes, despite the fact that making it to the big leagues in any sport is no mean feat.
