Where does hall pass come from?

We define the non-slang sense of hall pass as “a card that shows that a student has permission to be out of class during the time.” Although, as far as we know, physical cards are not given out for the slang sense, the idea of having a license to do something one normally wouldn’t be allowed to do carries over.
