Examples of Groyper

In the plainest terms, Groypers are supporters of Mr. Fuentes. Katherine Dee, who writes about internet culture, said that fealty to Mr. Fuentes is the Groypers’ defining feature. “I think that Nick Fuentes is among the best examples of ‘politics as fandom’ that exists,” said Ms. Dee, who uses a pseudonym. Otherwise, “it’s a fairly loose group without clear ideological borders,” she added.

These young white nationalists called themselves the Groyper movement—a moniker based on an obscure Pepe the Frog meme. Their agenda had three major points: advocating for anti-Semitism; advancing the theory that white Americans are being “replaced” by immigrants, including legal ones; and asserting the necessity of explicit homophobia.

Where does Groyper come from?

Fuentes gained prominence when he attended the “Unite the Right” white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. As Fuentes gained popularity, his followers began mobilizing into a network of white nationalists known as Groypers. Groyper comes from the name of a cartoon frog used in racist Internet memes.
