Do numbers has also been in use since at least the ‘00s in the context of song and album sales, specifically by rap and hip-hop artists. Over the years, artists including Lil Nas X, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, and Nas, among many others, have used forms of the phrase to refer to making lots of money/sales. One of the earliest examples might be from the song “50 Bricks” by OJ da Juiceman: “Ice around my neck ‘cause I’m doin’ numbers.” Social media and other uses appear to have come later.
How is do numbers used?
In uses referring to sales/earnings, do numbers is overwhelmingly positive, but in social media contexts, there’s always the possibility that doing numbers could bring unwanted attention to oneself.
