What does digital footprint mean?

A digital footprint is the accumulation of data that a person generates through their use of the internet and connected devices. This includes not only their online writing (such as comments and posts), but also information such as searches, pages visited, locations in which their computer or Internet-connected devices have been used, as well as various other kinds of metadata.

Where does digital footprint come from?

The word has been in use since the early 1990s, although it was not until the 21st century, with the widespread use of the Internet and e-commerce, that it entered mainstream use.
