Examples of butter mom

I too would proudly label myself a butter mom. While it might be controversial to some families, I never say no when my daughter asks for a snack, no matter how close it is to dinner. The exception might be if she asks for something sweet like a donut, which is rare. I also don’t mind if she eats processed foods, the ultimate boogeyman in our wellness-obsessed culture.

People saying “there’s no butter mom, no one used butter in the 90’s” meanwhile in Minnesota the state fair has been carving life size butter heads of the Princess Kay of the Milky Way pageant winners for decades! 😂

Yeah, a butter mom encourages you to eat full meals while also encouraging an active, outdoor lifestyle.

According to Alexandra Turnbull, a dietitian and mother who works in pediatric nutrition, the butter mom label reflects a broader reaction to restrictive feeding norms—not a literal endorsement of butter. “The ‘butter mom’ trend is really a reaction to more restrictive feeding styles,” Turnbull said. “It’s less about butter itself and more about taking a relaxed, less fear based approach to food—allowing all foods to have a place and helping kids feel comfortable around eating.”

Where does butter mom come from?

Butter mom became popularized online in the mid-2020s.

How is butter mom used?

In addition to referring to a parenting trend or style, butter mom is also used to refer a fashion aesthetic, especially one reminiscent of some adult women of the 1990s presumed to share similar attitudes toward food and parenting as today’s butter moms (there are also many videos on social media disputing the idea that such butter moms existed in the 1990s). YMMV, as we are lexicographers and not fashionistas, but the butter mom style appears to feature a lot of denim (jeans but also vests, etc.).

The 90’s butter mom style is all about embracing comfort while showcasing a distinct flair that resonates with those who grew up in the 90s.
