What does guardian mean?

Guardian may be defined in ways that might be apt for the name of a professional sports franchise (“one that guards”), in ways that are inapt for such a name (“one who has the care of the person or property of another”), and in ways that might be puzzling in such a setting (“a superior of a Franciscan monastery”).
