Usage of Transgenderism

While originally a neutral and largely academic term referring primarily to the fact of being a person whose gender identity differs from the sex the person was identified as having at birth, transgenderism has come to refer to consideration of transgender identity as an acceptable identity. This newer use was coined by people calling for legal and social denial of such consideration, and has affected all uses of the word, which is now widely rejected by transgender people themselves.
