  1. :  any of several crystalline acids C10H6(OH)COOH derived from the naphthols: such as a :  a yellow acid derived from beta-naphthol and used as an intermediate for azo dyes and pigments —called also beta-hydroxynaphthoic acid, 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid — see naphthol as b :  a white to reddish acid derived from alpha-naphthol and used as an analytical reagent —called also 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid
