borrowed from Spanish, "coin, money," going back to Latin dēnārius "silver coin worth ten asses" — more at denier entry 2

Note: The i in Spanish dinero for expected e (also in Portuguese dinheiro, Catalan diner, Gascon dinè) is perhaps due to the influence of Greek dēnárion, borrowed from the Latin word. In early post-classical and medieval Greek the eta in the first syllable would have been pronounced [i].
