: a small, short-tailed, chocolate-brown weasel of northeastern No. America that has a white coat in winter

Note: Bonaparte's weasel is considered either a subspecies (Mustela erminea cicognanii) of ermine or, especially formerly, a separate species (Mustela cicognanii).
