The Rise of "Fat Bikes" – Big Wheels for the Snow

Fat Bike

Fat bikes are bicycles with tires that are wide, sometimes twice the width of the tires on a typical mountain bike, and underinflated, making them ideal for riding over soft surfaces like snow, sand, and mud.

At first they were called fat tire bikes – because they were, you know, bikes with fat tires. Today the term is fat bike (also styled as fatbike), and it comes with several companion terms: you can fat bike (verb) on a fat bike and you may enjoy fat biking (gerund) as an activity. You won't win the Tour de France, but at least you’ll be going a lot faster than the snowshoers.
