Introduction
Constructions like “naan bread” and “ATM machine” often scorch the haggises of some readers due to their real or perceived redundancy, but as a descriptive dictionary, we refrain from such tsk-tsking. In other words, our haggises are evenly cooked.
When English users borrow a word from another language they sometimes place it before an existing and similar word. Thus naan, which comes nān, meaning “bread” in both Hindi and Urdu, often gets put before the word bread. (Brioche does as well, though its French forebear does not translate directly to “bread,” the French equivalent of “bread” being pain.) But since the English naan does not mean “bread,” “naan bread” doesn’t actually mean “bread bread.”
“ATM machine” (effectively “automated teller machine machine”) on the other hand, represents a true tautology, with tautology defined as “needless repetition of an idea, statement or word or an instance of such repetition.” Abbreviations and acronyms are fertile ground for tautologies, but even so, they made lead us to ask: is such repetition truly needless? Or needless to everyone, in every context or circumstance?
The following is a list of eight pairs of words commonly invoked as redundancies, whether true or no. (Does “ahi tuna” really equal “tuna tuna” and does “shrimp scampi” equal “shrimp shrimp”? What do you think?) Each pair is accompanied by quotations from the same publication showing both the single word and its “redundant” version, perhaps illustrating that when it comes to language, there’s more than one way to heat a haggis.
