Medical Definition of pneumonolysis 

: either of two surgical procedures to permit collapse of a lung:

a : separation of the parietal pleura from the fascia of the chest wall

called also extrapleural pneumonolysis

b : separation of the visceral and parietal layers of the pleura

called also intrapleural pneumonolysis
