  1. :  a genus of lipophilic typically nonpathogenic yeastlike imperfect fungi including one (M. furfur synonym Pityrosporum oribiculare) that causes tinea versicolor and another (M. ovalis synonym Pityrosporum ovale) that is associated with seborrheic dermatitis
