: a pattern of psychopathological behavior characterized by the giving of approximate answers (as 2 × 2 = about 5) and found in prisoners and in others who consciously or unconsciously seek to give misleading information regarding their mental state

Sigbert Joseph Maria (1853–1931), German psychiatrist. In 1898 Ganser described the syndrome that now bears his name.
