:an age classification of blood granulocytes and especially neutrophils that is based on the number of lobes of the nucleus with increasing lobulation regarded as indicative of increasing age — see shift to the left, shift to the right — compare schilling index

Biographical Note for arneth index

  • Arneth, Joseph (1873–1955), German physician. Arneth specialized in hematology and wrote several studies of diseases of the blood. He introduced the Arneth index in 1904 and advocated its use as a valuable aid in determining the reaction of bone marrow to infectious agents.
