a : the yellowish or greenish yellow oil with a penetrating odor of sage obtained from the leaves of the common sage (Salvia officinalis) and used chiefly in flavoring
b : the pale yellow oil with an odor like that of ambergris obtained from the flowers of clary (Salvia sclarea) and used chiefly in perfumery
