: any of the six conurbations in England that were established as administrative units in 1974
Note: The six metropolitan counties are Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire. The metropolitan county councils were abolished in 1986.
