  1. :  any of several dark-colored oil-soluble mixtures of sulfonic acid derivatives of petroleum that are obtained as by-products in refining white oils with sulfuric acid or made as primary products by sulfonation of petroleum distillates and are used as such or in the form of salts chiefly as emulsifying agents, as rust-proofing agents, and as additives to lubricants
