: a grebe (Podiceps auritis) that is widely distributed in northern parts of the northern hemisphere, is chiefly dark above and silky white below, and is distinguished when in breeding plumage by a glossy black head banded on either side with gold which encloses the eye and terminates in a brief ear tuft
