It created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) within the Department of Labor to oversee its provisions. The law required employers to maintain certain health and safety standards and submit to periodic government inspection of workplaces. OSHA's efforts to enforce regulations have often been the subject of legal battles.
