  1. :  an arrangement of metallic elements or ions usually in a column or table according to their electrode potentials determined under specified conditions, the order showing the tendency of one metal to reduce the ions of any other metal below it in the series; also :  a similar arrangement including nonmetallic elements or ions as well as metallic elements —called also electrochemical series
