Word History
Etymology
perhaps borrowed from Spanish or Portuguese cabra "goat" + -etta, variant of -ette as a commercial name for imitations of natural fabrics (as leatherette) — more at cabrilla
Note:
The history of this name, which first appears in commercial transactions in the 1890's, is obscure. The leather called cabretta does not appear to ever have been made from goatskin.
