: a foliage disease of conifers caused by any of several ascomycetous fungi (especially Herpotrichia nigra and Neopeckia coulteri) and characterized by a dense cobwebby or felty growth of dark brown to black mycelium on the branches that kills the leaves chiefly by excluding air and light
