Greek akro-, from ákros "at the farthest extreme, topmost," going back to Indo-European *h2eḱ-r- (derivative of the base *h2eḱ- "pointed"), whence also Latin ācer, ācris "sharp, pointed, biting," (with irregular lengthening), Sanskrit aśri- "corner, angle, edge," Middle Irish ér "noble, great," Old Church Slavic ostrŭ "sharp," Lithuanian (16th-century) aštras — more at edge entry 1
