Definition of Tanganyika

former country in eastern Africa between Lake Tanganyika and the Indian Ocean — see german east africa
Note: Tanganyika was administered by Britain from 1920 to 1961. It became an independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1961 with Dar es Salaam as its capital. In 1964 it united with Zanzibar to form the republic of Tanzania.
