island in the Pacific off the southeast coast east of Fujian, China area 13,892 square miles (35,980 square kilometers), population 23,340,000

Note: Taiwan belonged to Japan from 1895 to 1945. Since 1949 it has been the seat of the (Nationalist) Republic of China, with Taibei as its capital.
