: a large order of teleost fishes that is the most primitive group of teleosts and that includes about 50 living families (as of the herrings and salmons) whose fishes have soft-rayed fins, an air bladder connected with the alimentary canal by a duct, abdominal pelvic fins, the anterior vertebrae unmodified and similar to the others, and usually a mesocoracoid or precoracoid arch
