Definition of Assab

seaport on the Red Sea in southeastern Eritrea
Note: Assab was acquired by the Italian government in 1882, becoming Italy's first African colonial possession. Later, as part of Ethiopia, it was important to shipping. Assab became part of Eritirea when it gained independence in 1993.
