probably alteration (after befuddle) of earlier dumfoozled "confused," perhaps blend of dumbfounded (past participle of dumbfound) and fuzzle, variant of fuddle

Note: Also perhaps relevant is bamboozle, with a similar consonant-vowel frame, despite the difference in sense.
