Sartorial

President Obama's tan suit stole the headlines ...

When:

Lookups spiked on August 29, 2014.

Why:

President Obama addressed turmoil in the Middle East and Ukraine in an end-of-summer news conference, but comments on social media changed the subject to what he was wearing. The President appeared in a season-appropriate tan suit that inspired such puns as "Yes we tan!" and "The audacity of taupe."

(Taupe also spiked in lookups).

At the end of a summer filled with serious and somber news, it seems that everyone needed an excuse to switch to silly season, if only for a day. President Obama, like most politicians, usually wears a dark suit. He has commented in the past that the less he thinks about variety of clothing, the more he can think about more important things.

Sartorial means "of or relating to a tailor or tailored clothes." It comes from the Latin word sartor, which means "patcher" or "tailor."
