Kylie Jenner's new tattoo shows the phonetic spelling of sanity—ˈsa-nə-tē—in red ink. She posted a photograph on Instagram that sent many people to the dictionary, some to confirm the dictionary's pronunciation symbols, others who thought that the word was misspelled. (It isn't.)
Sanity means "soundness or health of mind" and came to English through French from the Latin word meaning "healthy" or "sane." Sanitary shares the same Latin root.
The upside-down e used in the pronunciation symbols is called a schwa.
