John Dean on Trump: "It will end in calamity."

“an event that causes great harm and suffering”

Calamity spiked in lookups on January 31, 2017, after former White House Counsel to President Nixon John Dean used the word in a tweet criticizing President Donald Trump:

Dean was fired by President Nixon in 1973 because he refused to participate in a cover-up of the Watergate break-in, and Dean’s subsequent testimony to a Senate committee led to Nixon’s resignation.

Calamity means “an event that causes great harm and suffering” and is synonymous with disaster. It came to English from French in the 15th century, and goes back to the Latin word calamitas, meaning “damage” or “disaster.”
