Why:

The announcement of the Time 100 - a list of the 100 most influential people in the world - includes Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel, and Janet Yellen, but the magazine's assertion that "this was the year of pop feminism" sent many people to the dictionary. "Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, and Pharrell are the biggest pop icons of the year - and they're all outspoken feminists," declared a Time article online.

Feminism is defined as both "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunites" and "organized activity in support of women's rights and interests." It entered the language in 1895, at a time when efforts for women's political equality were becoming organized and widespread in England and the United States.
