President Obama defended his executive action on immigration in a speech, describing his plan as one of accountability and not amnesty:
"That's the real amnesty-leaving this broken system the way it is. Mass amnesty would be unfair."
Debate over the president's politics and policy began immediately, and usually included the word amnesty.
Amnesty means "the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals." It comes from the Greek word that means "forgotten."
