Abhorrent

Nike dropped its sponsorship of boxer Manny Pacquiao after he called homosexuals “worse than animals.” The Filipino celebrity athlete is running for the Philippine Senate; asked for his position on gay marriage, he said he opposed not only gay marriage but homosexuality itself.

Nike’s official response:

We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.

Abhorrent means “causing or deserving strong dislike or hatred.” It derives from abhor (“to loathe”), which comes from the Latin word that literally meant “to shudder or shiver from.” In other words, the reaction to something that is hated became a way to describe it.
