Misogyny

In reaction to Rush Limbaugh's comments about ...

When:

Lookups spiked on March 2, 2012.

misogyny

Why:

The word was widely used in commentaries about Rush Limbaugh calling a Georgetown Law student a "slut" and a "prostitute" after she testified at a congressional hearing against health care exemptions for religious institutions.

Misogyny, which means "hatred of women," comes from the Greek word with the same meaning.

Although it first appeared in English in the 1600s, use of misogyny has risen sharply (and fallen) in recent decades, as shown here.
