When:

Lookups spiked on February 14, 2014.

Why:

As usual on Valentine's Day, many people were thinking about the meaning of love.

Most people, no doubt, are interested in more of a philosophical meaning than a dictionary meaning. Let's start with some dictionary senses anyway: "strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties," "attraction based on sexual desire," and "unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another."

Because such definitions inevitably have a Spock-like quality, the "Seen & Heard" section on the love page receives a lot of comments. For example:

"We all have a spirit, a soul. Love is what keeps it alive."

"Love defined in one word is forgiveness."

"Physical attraction + deep respect for yourself and the other individual."

"It is the strongest force in the world yet the most humble..."

On the other hand, some visitors who answer the question "what made you want to look up love?" aren't especially moved:

"English paper."

However you choose to define the word, we hope you had a nice Valentine's Day.
